FERHUNDE KALFA HİKÂYESİNDE BAĞDAŞIKLIK VE TUTARLILIK GÖRÜNÜMLERİ

Özet

Text linguistics affirms text as a basic unit in language studies and investigates for the meaning of the text in the context of the connections between the sentences. In this context, Linguistic text is defined as a sequence of sentences that form successive and meaningful integrations. This definition demonstrates that the cues that make up the text are not randomly ordered and that there must be appropriate links between them in each direction. Therefore, the text should be discussed as a whole together with its structure, its function and the relations among its constituent elements. For this reason, textuality criteria have been established in textual studies to determine whether a linguistic phenomenon is text or not. Cohesion and coherence are the textual criteria used to determine whether a linguistic unit is text. Cohesion is shaped by the connection of the cues in the text and is more focused on the grammatical appearance of the text. But coherence is related to the overall integrity of the text and its acceptability. The cohesion condition of a text is provided by the linguistic elements of the surface structure of the text while the coherence condition is provided by the logical relations between the meanings of the deep structure of the text. In this study, the story text of Ferhunde Kalfa of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, one of the well-known authors of Turkish literature, will be examined according to the criteria of cohesion and coherence. The appearance of cohesion and coherence will be exemplified by selected quotations from the story.
