Abstract

A STUDY ON THE VARIED USE OF ADVERBIAL PARTICIPLE “İKEN” IN THE DIALECTS OF WESTERN THRACE – XANTHI AND KOMOTINI
It is known that the adverbial participle suffixes in Turkish have been used as fixed phrases since ancient times and are used as derivational suffixes. It is also a phonological feature of those suffixes to exceptionally form idiomatic participles with case markers. The suffix –iken forms adverbs when added to inflected verbs and nominal roots. Different from other adverbial participles, it cannot be directly added to verb bases. It has also a special feature in terms of shape and usage when added to substantive verbs. In written Turkish, when added to the words after various tense suffixes (-mIş, -yor, -AcAk) and particularly after the Turkish aorist tense suffix [(-A/-I)r, -mAz)], this special adverbial suffix normally takes the form of (i-/y) ken regardless of vowel harmony. as is the same with the noun roots; however, it takes the form of -kan/-ken in dialects of Turkish in harmonization with the word or the last suffix. This study deals with the place of adverbial participle suffix iken in the dialects of Xanthi and Komotini. There are a good number of allamorphes of -iken in the region. Variants of this adverb-verb suffix used in the region dialects have also been tried to be compared with the writing language and Anatolian and Thracian dialects in general. These structures, which include both structurally and semantically different uses, are important in terms of giving clues about the richness of the region's dialects.
