Özet

The purpose of the current study was set to be to determine the listening problems experienced by middle school students in their Turkish lessons and their expectations of how to become better listeners in these lessons. The current study employed the interview method, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group of the current research was constituted by 120 students attending middle schools located in the city of Aksaray in 2017-2018 school year. The current study employed the content analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. As a result of this analysis, five themes were found concerning the listening problems experienced in Turkish lessons. These themes are environment, listening text, listening activities, Turkish teacher and student and four themes were found concerning their expectations related to these problems. These four themes are environment, listening text, listening activities and Turkish teacher. The listening problems experienced by the participants in Turkish lessons are mostly related to noise made by students, crowded classroom, long and boring listening texts, presence of the unknown words, boring listening activities, husky voice of teacher and his/her reading listening texts very fast. Their expectations for finding solutions to these problems are students’ becoming quiet, reducing the number of students in classes, shortening listening texts, delivery of Turkish lessons by Turkish teacher in an enjoyable manner, his/her using loud voice while delivering lessons and controlling the class. Thus, it can be argued that the Turkish teacher should detect the listening problems of students, provide a good listening environment and be a good listener and speaker.
