Özet

The aim of this study is to determine the views of parents on children's reading and library habits and their expectations from the children's library. 118 parents participated in the research in which phenomenological design was used. In the study, Parental Survey for Library Use and Reading Habit was used as data collection tool, which was prepared by the researchers. Content analysis technique was used to analyse the data. As a result of the research, it was stated that the number of books read increased according to the parents’ educational level, but about two thirds of the participants did not have reading habits. It was observed that in order to encourage children to read books, parents were most likely to use the techniques by buying books for the interest/desire of the children and being a model by reading books. It was noticed that the participants usually chose the books for their children by taking care of children’s desire or choosing the books containing a large number of pictures. Parents recommended that to popularize the library, it be organized in accordance with the colourful world of children and its content be enriched. In addition, it was understood that parents expected to increase the number of activities for children in the library and to educate the library staff for children's psychology.
