Özet
In this study, Hilmi Ziya Ülken's ideas on modernization are discussed with a holistic perspective on certain lines. By making comparisons from place to place, the ground on which Ülken's ideas sit has been tried to be pointed out. Throughout the study, how Ülken's views on modernization were shaped by the analysis he made about the history of ideas is explained. The shortcomings of such an analysis in understanding Turkish modernization have been tried to be pointed out. An hermeneutic methodology was used in the related study. Ülken's demanded modernization method was questioned and it was stated that the form of nationalism, which he claimed was necessary for modernization, could not be explained by general evaluations. At the end of the study, Hilmi Ziya Ülken was defined as a republican conservative portrait.
