Examination of the Attitude of Reading Students in the 8th Grades in Terms of Use Internet and Reading Habits
The aim of the research is to examine the children’s attitude of reading in 8th grades in terms of internet use and reading habits. The population of the research consists of the students attending 8th grade classes in the secondary schools under the Ministry of National Education in the provincial center of Çankırı. The sample is composed 336 children (160 girls, 176 boys), in which people from different socio-economic class as lower, middle and upper have resided, and attending in 8th grade at six secondary schools determined by stratified sampling method. The data were collected with the “Attitude Scale towards Reading Habit” developed by Balcı (2009). Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were used in the data analysis. The analyses revealed that the children who controlled use of the internet, using the internet for homework and learn, have a library, read more than 16 books a year and every day, whose parents often buy books, reading novels and stories have higher significantly attitude of reading grades on average (p<0.05).
