Abstract
AN EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF DÖVLETMEMMET AZADI ON HIS SON MAHTUMKULU
An artist's family and social environment are the leading factors that influence his personality and literary creativity. Mahtumkulu, the greatest poet of the Turkmen literature, lived in the 18th century and formed the basis of Turkmen literary language. His father, Dövletmemmet Azadı was an important poet and a community leader of the 18th century. Azadı had odes and rubaies besides his mathnavis, “Vagz-ı Azad”, “Behiştnama”, “Beş Namaz”, “Hekayat”. Vagz-ı Azad, in particular, is notable as it shows the literary skills and scholarly knowledge of Azadı. Azadı, in this very work, studies the idea that Turkmens living separately should unite and found one state. We can see that the same idea exists in the many works of Mahtumkulu, mainly in “Türkmenim”. Again, when we examine the works of Azadı, we see that his works cover all aspects of Turkmen life. Taking his first education from his father, Mahtumkulu used all these ideas in his works meticulously. Therefore, his father had a profound effect on Mahtumkulu, the national poet of the Turkmens, in terms of his creativity. In this paper, I will show the influence of Azadı on Mahtumkulu through his works.
