Abstract
On a Different Function of {-(G)X(N)Ca} Converb [Informing the “Comparison-Contrast” Systematically]
Converbs come first among the grammatical items that facilitate and enrich exposition by binding clauses to each other. The expression fertileness of Turkish converbs is provided with the functions they have. The suffix {-(G)X(n)CA} is one of the suffixes that embody multi-function. Two recognized functions of this suffix stand out in most of the researches. One of these main functions is to indicate “simultaneousness” -(-dığı zaman, -dığı vakit, -dığında)-; the other one is “limitative” -(-XncAyA kadar/dek/değin)-. Apart from those two, there is one more function of {-(G)X(n)CA} converb which is used as systematically as the others. This function which could be named as “contrast & comparison” -(-acağına, -acağı/-acak yerde, -maktansa)- was used in historical dialects as well as in contemporary Turkish dialects. In this research, we mainly focus on this issue.
