Abstract
A STUDY ON THE READING COMPREHENSION MISTAKES IN OTTOMAN TURKISH OF THE STUDENTS STUDYING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF TURKİSH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Ottoman Turkish is a historical writing language which witness a period of nearly six hundred years and plays an important role in the formation of Turkish language, history and worldview, and enables Turkish people to enrich the Turkish literature with thousands of works. The teaching of the Ottoman Turkish to the younger generations, which corresponds to one of the important time periods during the formation of the Turkish language, is important for the protection of the place of the Turkish language, history and culture on the world stage.
In this study, it was aimed to determine the reading mistakes within the Ottoman Turkish course of the students at department of Turkish Language and Literature at Faculty of Science and Literature. The question "What are the reading mistakes in the texts written by the Ottoman Turkish of the Turkish Language and Literature 2nd grade students of the Faculty of Science and Literature?" is the problem of this research. 341 students composed of 1st and 2nd year students of Turkish Language and Literature Faculty of Science and Literature participated in this study.
The method of research is a field study aimed at examining events in natural conditions. Scan model was used in the research. Open-ended questions asked during the final examination of the Ottoman Turkish lesson at the end of the spring semester were directed to the students in order to collect data for the research. Two lesson hours were given to the students as the last of the exam. In the research, document analysis method was used as data collection and analysis method.
‘The identified mistakes are categorized into two categories, one is categorized as generally and the other one is categorized in terms of "Turkish, Arabic and Persian" the three languages that make up the Ottoman Turkish. In the light of results, it has been found that students make many reading mistakes such as "unable to distinguish phonetics, misspelling words, skipping syllables, adding syllables, inserting letters, reading and inverse reading and not understanding the meaning of words / vocabulary.
