Abstract
STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ECHO QUESTIONS IN TURKISH: EXAMPLE OF THEATRE TEXTS
Question types in Turkish are classifed as yes/no questions, wh- questions and questions with intonation. Some studies includes echo questions in this classification. Echo questions that constitute the subject of this study are questions which are established on the basis of a declarative or on interrogative sentence, which often can not be understood, heard, or believed to be spoken in dialogues. Echo questions are similar to question types of yes/no questions, wh- questions or questions with intonation because of the usage of those and in point of fact that they are “dependent”. In other words, echo questions priorly need declarative or interrogative sentence with yes/no questions, wh- questions, questions with intonation. Since echo questions are dependent, they are used in the texts which are made of dialogs such as in theatre texts. So, theatre texts are the research sample of this study. First part of the study includes the proposal of classification of echo question types under the consideration of a dialogue which includes speaker-listener sides and type of sentence which is made by speaker. In the second part of the study, functionality of echo questions are evaluated and according to research sample, echo questions are used in incomprehension, consideration, anger, conspicuousness, approval, denial and astonishment functions.
