Abstract
ON THE LANGUAGE OF CHINGGIS-NÂMA MANUSCRIPTS
The works that tells Chinggis Khan’s legendary life and family tree have become famous with the name of “Chinggis-nâma”.
Chinggis-nâma manuscripts appear in the libraries with various names such as Defter-i Çiŋgiz-nāme, Dāstān-ı Nesl-i Çiŋgiz Ḫān, Ceŋgiz-nāme, Ḳıṣṣa-yı Çiŋgiz Ḫān, Şecere-yi Çiŋgiz Ḫān, Moŋġoldıŋ Kupiya Sejiresi... For the language of Chinggis-nâma manuscripts, more than forty manuscripts of which are present in the libraries outside Turkey and the oldest of which was written up or copied in 16th century, some terms such as “Volga-Tatar Literary Language, East Turkish, Chagatai, the Old Uzbek Language have been used. However, it is necessary to take a broader view of the subject in the light of recent research on historical dialects.
In this article, the characteristics of phonetic and morphology in well-known manuscripts are evaluated in order to determine the place of Chinggis-nâma in Turkish Language.
