Abstract
MIND GAMES IN BİZİM MECMUA
In this study it has been examined mind games published in Bizim Mecmua which had been one of the periodicals children’s journals in the 1920s. In the journal aims to contributing to be raised up the strong new generations in terms of physically, mentally and psychosocially of the Republic of Turkey, there have been many mind games that could promote children’s cognitive and affective development and abilities. These mind games have consisted of various riddles, puzzles, play and drawing tasks improving childrens’ feelings of curiosity and eagerness to learn, developing problem-solving and discovery skills, accelerating development of language and memory, promoting dinstinct skills and abilities of children such as making observation, reasoning, questioning, creativity and inventing. The study sample is consisted of 39 mind games selected from the Bizim Mecmua that have been published between the years of 1992-1927. This research has been conducted by adopting qualitative approach and document analysis procedure has been used. The research data were analyzed via content analysis. The mind games included in the journal have been translated from Ottoman Turkish and evaluated according to the principles used in the children’s education in nowadays. According to the research results, it has been observed that one century ago the mind games aimed at developing the visual-spacial, logical-mathematical and verbal intelligences as well as creative problem-solving and psychomotor skills were included in journal.
