Abstract
METATHESIS IN TURKISH: DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION
Metathesis is defined as “changing place of two successive consonants in one word” in the Turkish dictionary. It has taken place in many grammar books or in the glossaries of the Turkish language. However, it has been noticed that the definitions and classifications made about the subject should be reviewed. Because the explanations in the form of “in a word”, “between the voices” or “between the two voices” in the definitions come to the forefront. However, it has been found that the syllables and words also change place along with the voices in the metathesis in Turkish. Therefore, it was first tried to define a more comprehensive definition of metathesis, and then to classify the types of metathesis according to the elements that change place.
According to this, the metathesis, for which the definition as consciously or unconsciously changing of place of the units which are adjacent or not adjacent to each other in a word chain (voice, syllable, word...) has been suggested, has been divided into three as 1) Phonetic Metathesis; 2) Syllablic Metathesis and 3) Lexical Metathesis.
