Abstract
ON THE MAWLID OF GÖNENLİ YAHYA b. BAHŞÎ AND ITS VOCABULARY
The Old Anatolian Turkish, which developed on the basis of Oghuz language, has an important place in the history of Turkish language. Especially during the period of principalities, both the number of works written in Turkish increased and also the Oghuz language took important steps to become a writing language by encouragement of writers and poets to write in Turkish by the governors.
Most important of these Turkish works are mawlid (the Islamic memorial ceremonies) written in plain language for the common people without any artistic concerns. These poetic texts about his holiness Muhammad's birth, life, miracles and death have a special significance in our language history in terms both of their subjects and of exhibiting the vocabulary of the period in which they were written.
The present study aims to introduce the poet of Yahya b. Bahşî and Mawlid (the Islamic memorial ceremonies) and reveal fundamental vocabulary of Mawlid.
