Abstract
TABLE MANNERS OF THE TURKISH FAMILY, THE EXAMPLE OF DENİZLİ AND ITS FUNCTIONALITY
Nutrition is one of the indispensable actions for living beings. Human beings have gained the habit of nutrition by cooking various meats, vegetables and fruits with the discovery of fire. This action; over time, became a ritual or ceremony that varied in geographical axis; increasingly became a symbol of social and cultural identity. These ceremonies, which are the form of communication and cultural interaction, are indicative of the strength and status of the family, the role of political power, etc.; are a research subject which has functions of friendship, sharing, entertainment and socialization.
In the study, “table” and “table manners” in the Turkish family will be determined by the rules of “tableware” in the food-eating ceremonies of the Denizli region family. In the study, The socio-cultural functions of “table manners” will be discussed from various sources and from the data obtained from field research while trying to find out how the behaviour patterns related to the “table” form a communication with symbols or symbolism, how the family provides the inner discipline of the table, what are the differences between the “table manners” in the rural life and the “table manners” in the city life.
