Abstract
ŞEMSEDDİN SAMİ'S ARTICLE IN SERVET-İ FÜNUN, KAMUS-I TURKÎ AND KAMUS-I ARABÎ, AND HIS UNDERSTANDING OF LEXICOGRAPHY
Since the Tanzimat period, Turkish intellectuals intensely discussed the problems and issues of the Turkish language in various aspects. The name of the Turkish language, its relations with Arabic and Persian, and the flaws of Turkish lexicography at certain points are among these issues. Şemseddin Sami has been one of the most important opinion holders who addressed these issues in various articles. Sami had dealt with the problems of Turkish lexicography in detail and created new insights and practices to improve Turkish dictionary studies, and offered important suggestions and solutions on the name of the Turkish language, the simplification of Turkish, and how it should be related to Arabic and Persian. In this article, based on the article of Kamus-ı Türkî and Kamus-ı Arabî written by Şemseddin Sami, we tried to reveal Sami's views about language and especially lexicography. And we presented in the Latin alphabet the article published in Servet-i Fünun at the end of the article.
