Abstract
AN EXAMPLE ON SPATIAL EFFECTS OF IMMIGRATION FROM BULGARIA TO ANATOLIA: THE EFFECT OF IMMIGRATION RESULTING FROM BULGARIA ON PLACE NAMES IN BURSA BURSA - OSMANGAZI
Because migration movements cause various effects on space, they are also included in the discipline of geography. The aim of this study is to reveal the place names, one of the spatial effects caused by the immigrations resulting from Bulgaria within the borders of Bursa-Osmangazi.
This study was developed using the ethnographic design of qualitative research method. The study has emerged as a product of various data collection processes. Historical information, documents and statistics were obtained from some public institutions related the immigration and non-governmental organizations established by immigrants. In the field studies, data were collected through geographic observation and interviews.
With this research, it was determined that the immigrations originating from Bulgaria caused certain spatial effects in Osmangazi District of Bursa Province, and on the place names including the names of urban settlements such as streets, avenues, neighbourhoods that still had the traces of a considerable amount of migration and these were mapped. Thus, it was demonstrated that in Bursa, one of the important points of the Bulgarian Turks immigrating to Anatolia, which is an international immigration, the high cultural harmony of immigrants with the country of origin has been demonstrated.
Thus, a high cultural harmony was demonstrated between the immigrants’ country of origin and Bursa, which is one of the important points of the Bulgarian Turks’ immigration, which is considered as an international immigration, to Anatolia.
