Abstract
EFFECT OF APPLICATION OF THE VARK LEARNING MODEL ON ACHIEVEMENT, ATTITUDES AND RETENTION IN GRAMMAR TEACHING
This study seeks to determine the effect of a grammar teaching based on the VARK Learning Model on the academic achievement, attitude towards grammar and retention levels of 6th grade secondary school students. It draws on the matching pre-test and post-test control group design, which is a quasi-experimental design. The study group includes 57 6th grade students enrolled in two different classes in a state school located in the city center of Hatay, Turkey. The classes are grouped as the experimental group (27 students) and the control group (30 students) through unbiased assignment method. To teach the grammar subjects, the activities based on the VARK Learning Model are used in the experimental group and the tasks in the Turkish language textbooks are used in the control group. The data from this 11-week process are collected through the Turkish Grammar Achievement Test (TGAT) and Attitude Scale towards Turkish Grammar (ASTG). Using the SPSS software, the data are then analyzed through methods including frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test, and ANOVA. This study concludes that there is a significant difference for the experimental group who participated in the activities based on the VARK Learning Model.
