Abstract
USING POETRY IN DEVELOPING ARABIAN STUDENTS’ PRONUNCIATION SKILLS WHILE READING
The aim of this study is to determine whether using poetry in developing reading pronunciation skills and, recitation of a poem is whether positive effects for pronunciation in reading in teaching Turkish as a foreign language field. The study was conducted with 11 students at freshman year who study at the Department of Turkish Language and Translation in Language Faculty of Sana’a University in Yemen, in 2012-2013 academic year. The study was designed as an action research. Data are collected via the story “Tüccar ve Papağan” -“Merchant and Parrot”-students read at the beginning and end of the research. The obtained data show students’ have had problems in the audio sound “p, ü, c, ı, i, ğ, l, o” and eliding in many words, the opposite reading and appending some words. The poems students memorized have been found to contribute a positive effect to correct the pronunciation and, reduce reading errors.
