Abstract
INFORMATION AND GUIDANCE SIGNS AS CULTURAL INDICATORS
Information and guidance signs, each of which are designed to inform and guide the target groups, are essentially graphic design products that guide people for a particular behavior and enlighten them by providing information regarding a product, service, invention, idea, fact, etc.
These signs have a wide range of applications, including user guides, user interfaces, exercise charts, graphics on information boards, season signs at schools, and even the "You are here" signs in cities. Information and guidance signs are also cultural indicators that have become more and more involved in the daily lives of people.
While these visual cultural indicators fulfill their primary function of informing and guiding people, they contribute to the development or change of their aesthetic tastes, as well. Therefore, it is crucial that people who are competent in this field should participate in the design and application processes of these communication tools, which need to be designed and valued as if they are a work of art.
In this study, the information and guidance signs created with various understandings of design are examined and discussed by referring to some examples of signs in use. Furthermore, problems related to these signs are determined, and solutions to these issues are suggested.
