Abstract


INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FAMILY’S EFFICIENCY IN CREATING A READING CULTURE AND CHILDREN’S READING ATTITUDES

This study aimed to reveal the relationship between family reading culture competence and secondary school students’ reading attitude. The study group, designed in line with the relational survey model, includes fifth and sixth graders and their parents in Antalya. Data were collected through the ‘Family Competence Scale in Creating Reading Culture’ and the ‘Attitude Towards Reading Scale,’ after obtaining the necessary permissions. Findings indicate a significant relationship between children’s reading attitudes and their families’ competence in creating reading culture, including belief, modelling, participation, and family attitude. A moderate positive relationship was observed between the total scores of both scales. Results also revealed a positive medium-level relationship between children’s reading attitudes and the sub-dimensions of family modelling and participation in reading. A positive low-level relationship was found between children’s attitudes and the sub-dimensions of belief and family attitude. Thus, family competence plays an important role in shaping students’ reading attitudes.
