Abstract

THE PROBLEM OF TRANSITION FROM THE AUTHOR TO THE NARRATOR: NUN TALES
The relationship between the author and his work in Turkish literature gradually changes with the influence of many factors including literary movements. This metamorphosis, which reduces the author’s authority on the literary work, is described by Roland Barthes as “The Death of the Author”. The idea of the writer who thinks, plans, and writes the literary work as a ‘writer’ is seen as a classical literary device whereas writing fiction in which the narrator and character of the text develop simultaniously is regarded as the modern way. In the first two chapters of Nazan Bekiroğlu’s Nun Tales, which are composed of three parts, the calligrapher’s character wants to turn into a modern writer. His desire to write his work from his own world turns the relationship between the narrative and the writer into a problem. The calligrapher’s attempt to abandon the reader of the traditional literature, represented by the Sultan, and the main ground that feeds this literature is found strange by the narrator of the text and by the heroes in his stories. In this study, the first work of Bekiroğlu, The Nun Tales, will be analysed on the metamorphosis of a traditional narrative to a modern narrator using a postmodern technique as dialogic element.
