As with the increment on the number of the universities in recent years, the quota of students and the actual number of students in universities have been increasing rapidly. At the same time the number of students who is the first college student in his/her family (first generation) has been increasing. Considering there is no literature in Turkish, It is regard as important to explore the characteristics of first generation students and the problems they face during their collage life because of the quality of their college life. Also, it is worth to investigate the results of comparison with non-first generation students. Considering there is no literature related to this topic in Turkish, the first generation students were investigated by using chi-square and t-tests in this study. Also the academic performance of first generation students at the end of first year of college was examined and first generation and non-first generation students were compared. Based on the results, some suggestions related to first generation students were made.
