In Turkish grammar, even though the “substantive verb” has come to the fore with its function of making nouns predicates in sentences, it is a language element whose conceptual framework has not been fully drawn. Understanding this concept is difficult because of the following questions: In what forms does the substantive verb appear? How does it differ from copulas? What functions does it have? In what language category does it belong? Is this element a suffix or a verb? For this reason, it is clear that more work needs to be done on these unclear aspects of the substantive verb. In this study, the questions of what all these problems that prevent the conceptual field related to the substantive verb from being settled and how they can be solved are discussed. For this purpose, firstly the general literature has been scanned and the prominent articles and basic issues of the title of “substantive verb” have been emphasized. In the second part of the study, taking into account these data and the issues in grammar studies, the answer to the question “What is a substantive verb?”. Then, suggestions have been presented as to what should be understood from the substantive verb.
