Abstract

The reduplications in Turkish made by introducing “-r/-Ar... -mAz” to the same verb are used with the task of temporal adverb in the sentence and give the sentence the meaning that the movement in the actual verb occurs right after the movement in the gerundium. The reduplication ister istemez with the suffix “-r/-Ar... -mAz” to the verb iste- does not show the typical features of other reduplications made with the suffix “-r/-Ar... -mAz” with the meaning of “necessarily, out of hand; semi-voluntarily, somewhat compulsively”. The words gerek and ister are close near-synonym in some contexts. For this reason, the word gerek can be used interchangeably with the word ister and the preposition gerek... gerek... with the preposition ister... ister... In the historical manuscripts of Turkish, there is a reduplication of gerek gerekmez, which is used as an adverb of manner in the sense of “ister istemez”. The gerek gerekmez reduplication, which is not used very extensively, has been replaced by the same structure ister istemez reduplication, which is formed with the word ister, which is the close near-synonym of the word gerek. This situation explains the difference of ister istemez from other reduplications made by adding gerundium suffix “-r/-Ar... -mAz” to the same verb in terms of meaning and type.
